Add Variety to Your Oatmeal

Add Fruit
Dried: Dates, Apricots, Raisins, Craisins
Canned: Peaches, Pears, Applesauce, Pineapple
Frozen: Blueberries, Cherries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Cranberries
Fresh: Bananas, Blueberries, Strawberries, Apples
Add Nuts (whole, sliced, slivered)
Walnuts, Almonds, Pecans
Add Seeds
Sunflower, Pumpkin, Flaxseed
Add Flavor
Brown Sugar, Maple Syrup, Cinnamon, Preserves, Vanilla, Nutmeg, Ginger, Clove
Add Another Grain
Mix equal amounts of barley with oatmeal
Eat it Cold
Cook extra on the stove. Serve it cold the next day with lowfat vanilla (or other flavored) yogurt and fruit. Sprinkle ground nuts and/or ground flaxseed on top.
Hot Oatmeal Combinations
  • Dates, pecans, brown sugar
  • Peaches, pecans, brown sugar
  • Apples (or applesauce), walnuts, cinnamon
  • Blueberries, almonds, brown sugar
  • Apricots, pears, almonds, brown sugar
  • Bananas, walnuts, brown sugar
  • Strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, brown sugar
  • Cranberries, apples, pecans, cinnamon, brown sugar
  • Pineapple, almonds, brown sugar
  • Maple syrup, pecans
 Tip: For creamier oatmeal cook oats in skim or soymilk.
